Long brown swaths of dead vines, tree stumps and brush along each side of the Jones Falls Expressway don't look like much right now, but killing off existing greenery is the first step in a months-long effort by the State Highway Administration to replace thickets of exotic, invasive vines with new grass and trees, many of them native to Maryland.
